Translated from Ottoman Turkish by A.Z. Foreman
My tears
were like the streams that slake the garden sweet with fruit.
Forth flowed my love like water to a shy root in delight.
A weird Mejnun1 I am! The phantoms of my darling's eyes
Dance like distraught gazelles through my hallucinating sight.
Your eyelashes like witches showed true colors: clad in black,
Theirs was a pact of raiders to despoil my heart by night.
The heaving tree my heart became to match your budding body
Sways like a swooning cypress round the garden at full height.
O Nâ'ilî, the luster of your rising, virgin verses
Mocks the mere mirror of the sun, like moonfaced lovers' light.

Notes:
1 Mejnun: a crazed lover from Perso-Arabic lore who wandered the desert, mad with love, in the company of flighty gazelles who realized that he was harmless to them in his insanity.

Le mie lacrime a fiumi innaffiavano il
giardino dolce di frutti.
Via scorreva il mio amore come acqua a una
timida radice deliziato.
Uno stanco Mejnun sono! I fantasmi degli occhi
della mia cara
danzano come gazzelle sperdute nella mia vista
allucinata.
I tuoi cigli come streghe mostrano vero
colore: vesti nere,
loro fu un patto di girovaghi per spogliare il
mio cuore la notte.
Albero ansante il cuore per il tuo corpo in
bocciolo
ondeggia e sviene come cipresso ad altezza
piena.
Oh Nâ'ilî,
la voglia di sorgere, vergini versi
inganno di semplice specchio di
sole, luce di luna.
