The way a crow, et cetera

.

The way a crow
shook down on me
the dust of snow
from a hemlock tree

has given my heart
a change of mood
and saved some part
of a day I had rued.
Il modo in cui un corvo
scosse su di me
la polvere di neve
da un abete

ha dato al mio cuore
un cambio d’umore
e salvato una parte
di un giorno che avevo disfatto.

One of my wishes is that those dark trees,
so old and firm they scarcely show the breeze,
were not, as 't were, the merest mask of gloom,
but stretched away unto the edge of doom.

I should not be withheld but that some day
into their vastness I should steal away,
fearless of ever finding open land,
or highway where the slow wheel pours the sand.

I do not see why I should e'er turn back,
or those should not set forth upon my track
to overtake me, who should miss me here

and long to know if still I held them dear.
They would not find me changed from him they knew -
only more sure of all I thought was true.

o via dove lenta ruota versi sabbia.

Design

I found a dimpled spider, fat and white,
on a white heal-all, holding up a moth
like a white piece of rigid satin cloth--
assorted characters of death and blight
mixed ready to begin the morning right,
like the ingredients of a witches' broth--
a snow-drop spider, a flower like a froth,
and dead wings carried like a paper kite.
What had that flower to do with being white,
the wayside blue and innocent heal-all?
What brought the kindred spider to that height,
then steered the white moth thither in the night?
What but design of darkness to appall?--
If design govern in a thing so small.

Disegno

Cosa portò l’affine ragno a quell’altezza,
a sterzare la farfallina bianca nella notte?
Cosa se non disegno oscuro da scoordinare? –
Se disegno governi tanto piccola faccenda.
