That All, which always is all everywhere)

The crown

Deign at my hands this crown of prayer and praise
Weaved in my lone devout melancholy,
Thou which of good hast, yea, art treasury,
All changing unchanged Ancient of days.
But do not with a vile crown of frail bays
Reward my Muse's white sincerity;
But what Thy thorny crown gain'd, that give me,
A crown of glory, which doth flower always.
The ends crown our works, but Thou crown'st our ends,
For at our ends begins our endless rest.
The first last end, now zealously possess'd,
With a strong sober thirst my soul attends.
'Tis time that heart and voice be lifted high;
Salvation to all that will is nigh.

non ricompensare la bianca sincerità della mia Musa;
È tempo che cuore e voce si levino alti;

Annunciation

Salvation to all that will is nigh;

That All, which always is all everywhere,

Which cannot sin, and yet all sins must bear,

Which cannot die, yet cannot choose but die,

Lo! faithful Virgin, yields Himself to lie

In prison, in thy womb; and though He there

Can take no sin, nor thou give, yet He’ll wear,

Taken from thence, flesh, which death’s force may try.

Ere by the spheres time was created thou

Wast in His mind, who is thy Son, and Brother;

Whom thou conceivest, conceived; yea, thou art now

Thy Maker’s maker, and thy Father’s mother.

Thou hast light in dark, and shutt’st in little room

Immensity, cloistered in thy dear womb.

Annunciazione

guarda, vergine fedele, piega Sestesso a giacere
immensità claustrata in caro ventre.

The dream

Dear love, for nothing less than thee
would I have broke this happy dream;
it was a theme
for reason, much too strong for fantasy,
therefore thou wak’d’st me wisely; yet
my dream thou brok’st not, but continued’st it.
Thou art so true that thoughts of thee suffice
to make dreams truths, and fables histories;
enter these arms, for since thou thought’st it best,
not to dream all my dream, let’s act the rest.
As lightning, or a taper’s light,
thine eyes, and not thy noise wak’d me;
yet I thought thee
(for thou lovest truth) an angel, at first sight;
but when I saw thou sawest my heart,
and knew’st my thoughts, beyond an angel’s art,
when thou knew’st what I dreamt, when thou knew’st when
excess of joy would wake me, and cam’st then,
I must confess, it could not choose but be
profane, to think thee any thing but thee.
Coming and staying show’d thee, thee,
but rising makes me doubt, that now
thou art not thou.
That love is weak where fear’s as strong as he;
‘tis not all spirit, pure and brave,
if mixture it of fear, shame, honour have;
perchance as torches, which must ready be,
men light and put out, so thou deal’st with me;
thou cam’st to kindle, goest to come; then I
will dream that hope again, but else would die.

Per nessun altro, amore, avrei spezzato
questo beato sogno.
Buon tema alla ragione,
troppo forte per la fantasia.
Fosti saggia a destarmi. E tuttavia
sono accese e rispente, così tu tratti me.
Venisti per accendermi, vai per venire. Ed io
sognerò nuovamente
quella speranza, ma per non morire.

The good-morrow

I wonder by my troth, what thou and I
did, till we loved ? were we not wean’d till then ?
but suck’d on country pleasures, childishly ?
or snorted we in the Seven Sleepers’ den ?
‘twas so ; but this, all pleasures fancies be ;
if ever any beauty I did see,
which I desired, and got, ’twas but a dream of thee.
And now good-morrow to our waking souls,
which watch not one another out of fear ;
for love all love of other sights controls,
and makes one little room an everywhere.
Let sea-discoverers to new worlds have gone ;
let maps to other, worlds on worlds have shown ;
let us possess one world ; each hath one, and is one.

My face in thine eye, thine in mine appears,
and true plain hearts do in the faces rest ;
where can we find two better hemispheres
without sharp north, without declining west ?
whatever dies, was not mix’d equally ;
if our two loves be one, or thou and I
love so alike that none can slacken, none can die.

Daybreak

Stay, o sweet, and do not rise!
the light that shines comes from thine eyes;
the day breaks not; it is my heart,
because that thou and I must part;

stay or else my joys will die
and perish in their infancy.

Alba

Rimani, dolce tu, e non ti alzare!
luce che splende viene dai tuoi occhi;

se io da te mi devo separare;

rimani o le mie gioie periranno
morendo nella loro prima infanzia.

Il sogno

Per nessun altro, amore, avrei spezzato
questo beato sogno.
Buon tema per la ragione,
