Lament of the Empire's conscript (Let me ask who was the great aggressor? )

The border post ablast with sand and wind
Drear and wailing now from elder days
Leaves felled from trees, grasses yellowed with fall
I scale the tower surveil the foe's terrain —
Weed-choked ramparts derelict in the desert
Border town where not a wall remains
Bleachwhite bones a thousand frosts have weathered
 Jumbled barrows brushwood overtakes
Let me ask who was the great aggressor?
Nature's pet tribesmen moved with violent bane
So flamed with rage our godly Emperor
Bade his army bang the drums of war
His sunbalmed nature steamed to murderous air
Sent troops to invade and turmoil through the State
Three hundred sixty thousand men deployed
Now sorrow and sorrow — and sorrow's tears like rain
Though it grieved us so we got no choice but go
How can we farm our fields in these blasted acres
Till you've seen boys stationed at the border
Don't think you know the front line's dreary ache
General Li Mu is with us no more today
We frontier men are fodder for what infests these wastes

Yearning in Cháng'ān

  Endlessly yearning for you
in the city called Endless Peace,

where autumn crickets cry from the well's rail that shines of gold,
where flecks of frost blow chill and leave the bedmat colored cold,
with no light from the lonely little lantern,
the thread of longing set to snap out loud,
gaze at the moon, and heave a useless sigh:
my love, a flower beyond that wall of cloud!
and high above the heavens' blue dark reign
and down below the waters' pale waves stream
endless the sky, and far the journey - the fleet soul grieves in flight,
and cannot touch beyond those mountains even in a dream.

  So endlessly the yearning
  beats a man's heart down.

The rustling nightfall strews my gown with roses / La caduta frusciante della notte cosparge la mia veste di rose

The rustling nightfall strews my gown with roses,
And wine-flushed petals bring forgetfulness
Of shadow after shadow striding past.
I arise with the stars exultantly and follow
The sweep of the moon along the hushing stream,
Where no birds wake; only the far-drawn sigh
Of wary voices whispering farewell.

English version L. Cranmer-Byng

Tra i fiori io

solo con la coppa del vino

bevo da solo; alzo

la coppa e invito la luna

a bere con me, il suo riflesso

e il mio nella coppa, giusto

noi tre; sospiro

che la luna non può bere

e la mia ombra passa vuota

non dico mai una parola

con nessun altro amico, posso

avere per compagni solo questi due;

in tempi felici

anche io devo esserlo con tutto

quel che mi è intorno; siedo e canto

ed è come se la luna

mi accompagnasse; se poi

danzo è la mia ombra

a danzare con me; mentre

non ancora ebbro sono contento

di fare amicizia con la luna

e la mia ombra ma poi quando

ho bevuto troppo noi

ci separiamo; eppure sono

amici su cui sempre contare

non si emozionano mai;

spero che un giorno

noi tre ci incontriamo dinuovo

nel profondo della via lattea.

Amongst the flowers I
am alone with my pot of wine
drinking by myself; then lifting
my cup I asked the moon
to drink with me, its reflection
and mine in the wine cup, just
the three of us; then I sigh
for the moon cannot drink,
and my shadow goes emptily along
with me never saying a word;
with no other friends here, I can
but use these two for company;
in the time of happiness, I
too must be happy with all
around me; I sit and sing
and it is as if the moon
accompanies me; then if I
dance, it is my shadow that
dances along with me; while
still not drunk, I am glad
to make the moon and my shadow
into friends, but then when
I have drunk too much, we
all part; yet these are
friends I can always count on
these who have no emotion
whatsoever; I hope that one day
we three will meet again,
deep in the Milky Way.

I sat drinking

The fields are chill, the sparse rain has stopped;
the colours of Spring teem on every side.
With leaping fish the blue pond is full;
with singing thrushes the green boughs droop.
The flowers of the field have dabbled their powdered cheeks;
the mountain grasses are bent level at the waist.
By the bamboo stream the last fragment of cloud
blown by the wind slowly scatters away.

Ebbro mi alzai e andai verso i raggi di luna

volati via gli uccelli, e poche persone.

I sat drinking and did not notice the dusk,
Till falling petals filled the folds of my dress.
Drunken I rose and walked to the moonlit stream;
The birds were gone, and men also few.

Li Bai, On the way down...

On the way down Zhongnan Mountain, recluse Husi gives me a place to rest and wine to drink.

We come at dusk down the greenbacked mountain.
The mountain moon follows all the way.
When we gaze back at the path in distance
Green slopes are a slit of mist-grim gray.
You lead me off to your farmland cottage.
Your child holds a thorn gate open to you.
My passing clothes brush greening vines
On hideaway paths through green bamboo.

I say in delight: "what a place for resting!"
We savor the gorgeous wine you pour.
The pine wind blows: we sing its music.
The Star Stream1 ebbs: we sing no more.
Then I lie drunk and you ecstatic
Just losing Man's mind in joy galore

.

1-"Star Stream" one of many different Chinese names for the Milky Way

Poi io giaccio ubriaco e tu in estasi

in gioia si sperde la mente umana.

nota:

Li Bai, Thought on a quiet night

Thought on a quiet night

The moonlight is luminous at my bedside.
I look and mistake it for ground-fallen frost.
Head raised, I gaze toward the mountain moon.
Head lowered, I'm cold for home and lost.

Pensiero in una notte calma

Chiupu river song

My white hair extends three miles
the sorrow of parting made it this long.
Who would guess to look in a mirror
where autumn frost comes from

Canto del fiume Chiupu

I miei capelli bianchi son lunghi tre miglia,
Chi avrebbe detto! guardare in uno specchio
da dove proviene il gelo dell’autunno.
